Keep Your Eyes Open

Keep Your Eyes Open

Growing up, we’re always told to be aware of our surroundings—look both ways before crossing the street, pay attention to who’s around, and stay cautious in unfamiliar places. But as we grow in Christ, we realize that awareness goes beyond the physical. There’s a spiritual battle at play, and Satan is always lurking, seeking an opportunity to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

Scripture tells us that the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. But let that sink in—like a lion. He’s an imitator, a counterfeit. There is only one true Lion—the Lion of Judah, Jesus Christ. The enemy wants to be God, but he never will be. That’s why we must stay watchful, because not everything is as it seems. Deception is one of his greatest weapons, and if we’re not spiritually alert, we might mistake his lies for truth.

So how do we stay watchful? How do we recognize the imitator? How do we discern the counterfeit from the real thing?

1. Ask God for Wisdom and Discernment – The first step is always seeking God. James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Constantly pray for discernment, because only God can reveal what’s truly from Him.

2. Know the Truth – The best way to recognize a counterfeit is to be deeply familiar with the real thing. In the natural world, experts detect fake currency not by studying counterfeits, but by mastering the details of real money. The same applies spiritually—when we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, we can spot deception instantly (Hebrews 4:12).

3. Test Everything – 1 John 4:1 tells us to test the spirits to see if they are from God. Not everything that looks good or sounds spiritual is truly from Him. Compare everything—advice, teachings, opportunities—to the Word of God. If it contradicts His truth, it’s not from Him.

4. Stay in Prayer and Community – We were never meant to walk this journey alone. Surround yourself with godly people who can help sharpen your discernment (Proverbs 27:17). Accountability and wise counsel can keep you from falling for deception.

5. Watch for the Fruit – Jesus said in Matthew 7:16, “You will recognize them by their fruits.” Pay attention to the results of what someone teaches or the path you’re considering. Does it bring peace, align with scripture, and bear good fruit? Or does it lead to confusion, division, and compromise? The enemy can disguise himself as light (2 Corinthians 11:14), but his fruit always exposes him.

Stand Firm in God’s Power

We all know the scripture—“The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). The enemy’s mission is clear, but so is God’s promise.

So, I want to leave you with this: God is our ultimate source of power. There is no greater love than His, no one higher than Him, and nothing is too big for Him to take on. No matter what deception the enemy tries to throw your way, stand firm in the truth—God reigns, Jesus saves, and the victory is already won.
