When God Gets in the Boat

When God Gets in the Boat

Have you ever tried something, watched it fail, and immediately thought, Maybe it just wasn’t meant for me?

The job didn’t work out. The business didn’t take off. The plan fell apart.

You gave it everything you had, but still ended up with nothing to show for it.So you took the disappointment as your answer. But have you ever stopped and asked:

Was God in the mix?

That question hit me while reading Luke 5:1–6.Simon Peter and the other fishermen had been working all night, and they caught nothing. And these weren’t inexperienced fishermen. This was what they did. They had the knowledge, the equipment, and the experience.

Still, their nets came back empty. Then Jesus stepped into the picture. He told Simon to go back into the deep water and let down his nets again.Imagine how Simon must have felt.Jesus, I already tried that.

In fact, Simon tells Him, “We’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.”But Simon didn’t stop there. He essentially says, “But because You say so, I’ll do it again.”

And that changed everything.Luke 5:6 tells us:“When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.”

Same Boat. Same Nets. Same Water. Different Result.

What changed?Jesus was in the mix.Sometimes we rely so heavily on our own experience, knowledge, connections, plans, and timing that we don't realize we're trying to do everything in our own strength.

Then when it doesn't work, we automatically assume: Maybe it wasn't meant to be.But an empty net doesn't always mean God said no.Sometimes we need to ask ourselves whether we ever invited Him into it in the first place.

Did I pray about it?Did I ask God for direction? Did God tell me to do this, or did I decide to do it and then ask Him to bless it?There's a difference between asking God to bless our plan and allowing God to lead His plan.

Maybe God Isn't Saying Quit

Some doors are supposed to close. Some things God will tell us to release. But we shouldn't automatically call something over simply because it didn't work the first time.Sometimes God may be saying:Try again—but this time, with Me.

Before you throw away the net because it came back empty, ask God:Did You tell me to stop, or did disappointment make me stop? Was I following Your direction, or relying on my own understanding?Have I truly invited You into this?

Because when Jesus stepped into Simon's situation, the place that once produced nothing became the place of overflow.

And maybe that's the reminder you needed today.Your empty net doesn't automatically mean it's over.Seek God before you quit.Seek God before you try again. And if He tells you to let down the net one more time, trust Him enough to obey.

Don't just try again.Try again with Him.
